The first job to hand over: where smart firms start

4 min read · May 2026

Every owner we talk to eventually asks the same question: where do we even start? The honest answer is smaller than most expect.

Forget trying to fix everything at once. The firms getting ahead pick one job — the one costing the most hours, or the one only one person can do — and hand it over properly before touching anything else.

That’s deliberate. A single, well-chosen job proves the model works, builds trust with the team, and pays for itself fast enough to fund the next one. Try to fix five things at once and you prove nothing, because nobody can tell which change caused which result.

The pattern we see most often: inbound enquiries first, because it’s visible, constant, and painful when missed — followed by whatever’s eating the most senior hours, usually drafting or chasing.

Start small, prove it, then move to the next one. That’s the whole method. Twelve months from now, the business runs on a stack of small wins instead of one enormous bet.
