AI adoption is a leadership job. Here's why it starts at the top.
Every tool your business runs on was once new. Email needed a mandate. Slack needed a champion. No platform ever embedded itself into a company; someone at the top decided it mattered, used it themselves, and made it normal. AI is no different.
Yet a lot of leaders are treating it differently. Some fear it, some delegate it to whoever seems most technical, and some are simply waiting it out. All three moves send the same message to the team: this doesn't really matter here. And adoption dies quietly right there.
The leaders getting this right have flipped the frame. AI isn't a threat to manage, it's the biggest productivity opportunity their existing team has ever been handed. Not fewer people. The same people, spending less of their week on repetitive work and more of it on the work that actually needs them.
The pattern that works is top down. Start with the leadership team: get hands on with the tools, identify where the real opportunities sit in your business, and agree what good looks like. Once the people at the top understand it firsthand, rolling it out across the company stops being a technology project and becomes what it should have been all along: normal tool adoption, led from the front.
You did this with email. You did it with whatever runs your calendar, your files, your client comms. This is the same job. The only real mistake is leaving it to chance.
