Business 1.0 and 2.0: which version are you running?

3 min read · August 2026

Every business is running a version of itself. Most are running 1.0: manual, fragmented, held together through effort. It works, because your best people keep it working. But look closely at their week and you'll find them doing work the business needs that doesn't need them.

Business 2.0 is the same business with the plumbing rethought. Enquiries followed up before you've checked your phone. Proposals drafted while you're still in the meeting. Clients onboarded without anyone managing a checklist. Your team doing the work only they can do.

The jump between the two isn't a software purchase. The heavy lifting is the thinking: getting clear on what your 2.0 actually looks like before anything gets built. Which processes deserve to survive the rewrite. Where the knowledge sits that only exists in one person's head.

Then you build toward it one layer at a time. Redesign a process, hand the job over, prove it worked, move to the next. Each layer makes the next one easier. Twelve months of that compounds into a business that looks different from the inside.

Here's the trap: version 1.0 doesn't fail. It keeps working right up until a competitor running 2.0 quotes faster, responds sooner and delivers with half the overhead. By then the gap is structural, not cosmetic.

The good news is that the first step costs nothing but thinking time. Getting clear on your 2.0 is work nobody can automate, and it's the part most businesses skip. Don't skip it.
